It has one active and two reaction chambers, which effectively reduces recoil, and two compensator holes which reduce barrel lift. In VR-8 (unlike VR-8T), there is no initial partition. This change prevents gas leakage behind the thread. Another advantage is the ability to clean the barrel without removing it, as the first chamber begins at the same level as the muzzle.
